Abstract

Aging is associated with physiological changes that may impair balance, mobility, and functional independence in older adults, increasing the risk of falls. Physical therapists can address modifiable fall risk factors with balance practice, strengthening, functional exercises, and guidance tailored to older adults. This review examines the evidence on their contribution to fall prevention. This literature review searched PubMed and SciELO for studies published from 2022 to 2026. Seven studies were included in the final synthesis. The findings indicate benefits for balance, functional mobility, and physical performance, although reductions in fall occurrence were not uniform across all programs. Physical therapy contributes to fall prevention by supporting functional capacity, safety, and independence in older adults.
