Population aging has contributed to the increased prevalence of chronic diseases, functional limitations, and musculoskeletal alterations in older adults, with sarcopenia standing out as an important condition characterized by the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength. In bedridden older adults, prolonged immobility intensifies functional decline and contributes to increased physical dependence. In this context, home-based therapeutic exercise emerges as an important physiotherapeutic strategy for preventing sarcopenia and maintaining the functionality of this population.
The present study aims to analyze the effects of home-based therapeutic exercise on the prevention of sarcopenia in bedridden older adults. This study consists of an integrative literature review with a descriptive nature and qualitative approach, conducted through a bibliographic survey in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and PubMed/MEDLINE databases. Scientific articles published in Portuguese and English between 2016 and 2026 related to the proposed theme will be included.
It is expected that the results will contribute to expanding scientific knowledge regarding the benefits of home-based therapeutic exercise in preserving muscle strength, maintaining functionality, and preventing the deleterious effects of immobility in bedridden older adults, as well as supporting evidence-based physiotherapeutic practice.
